As photographers, we're accustomed to being the ones behind the lens, capturing the essence of others. But, there comes a time when we find ourselves on the other side of the camera—facing the lens for our very own headshots. It's a moment that, admittedly, can be a bit intimidating. However, let me share with you my recent experience of stepping out from behind the camera and into the spotlight.
The Initial Jitters: Being in front of the lens is a different ball game. The initial jitters, the self-conscious thoughts—yes, even photographers go through it. We're so used to directing and framing others that suddenly being the subject can feel a bit out of our comfort zone.
Choosing the Right Photographer: When it came time for my updated headshots, I knew I needed someone who could not only capture my essence but also understand the unique dynamics of photographing a fellow photographer. Enter the amazing Dana Wolfe Niemeier—her expertise and creative eye made the decision a no-brainer.
The Setup: For this session, Dana opted for a setup using two constant lights—a 60" octapod with a grid for the main light and a back strip light with a grid for that perfect rim effect. It's always fascinating to experience the technical side of a photoshoot from the perspective of the subject.
Overcoming Discomfort: I won't lie; there were moments of discomfort and that nagging self-awareness. However, Dana's professionalism and ability to create a relaxed atmosphere played a significant role in making the experience enjoyable.
The Reveal: Seeing the results afterward was a pleasant surprise. Those moments of vulnerability captured in each frame told a story—a story of a photographer embracing the challenge and showcasing authenticity.
Lessons Learned:
- Step out of your comfort zone: Being in front of the camera can be uncomfortable, but it's a growth experience worth embracing.
- Choose the right photographer: A skilled photographer can make all the difference, understanding both the technical and personal aspects of the shoot.
- Enjoy the process: It's not just about the end result; it's about enjoying the process and embracing the journey.
So, fellow photographers, if you're hesitating about updating your headshots, take the plunge. You might be surprised at the creativity and authenticity that unfolds when you become the subject. Huge thanks to Dana Wolfe Niemeier for making this experience not only bearable but truly enjoyable. Check out the results and consider this your friendly nudge to face the lens—trust me, you'll be happy you did!
